Procter & Gamble Recalls Certain Iams Canned Cat Food

Product may contain insufficient levels of thiamine (Vitamin B1)

The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) is voluntarily recalling specific lots of Iams canned cat food in North America as a precautionary measure.  Diagnostic testing indicated that the product may contain insufficient levels of thiamine (Vitamin B1), which is essential for cats.  Cats that were fed these canned products as their only food are at greater risk for developing signs of thiamine deficiency.

Schnucks and Logli customers are urged to check for the following affected varieties with specific code dates:

Iams 3-ounce can – Filets with Skipjack Tuna in Sauce     UPC: 0 19014 02491     Dates affected: 09/2011 through 06/2012

Iams 3-ounce can – Pate with Gourmet Chicken     UPC: 0 19014 29633     Dates affected: 09/2011 through 06/2012

Iams 3-ounce can – Pate with Pacific Salmon     UPC: 0 19014 02503     Dates affected: 09/2011 through 06/2012

Early signs of thiamine deficiency may include loss of appetite, salivation, vomiting and weight loss.  In advanced cases, signs may include ventroflexion (downward curving) of the neck, wobbly gait, falling, circling and seizures.  Contact your veterinarian immediately if your cat is displaying any of these signs.  If treated promptly, thiamine deficiency is typically reversible.

Schnucks and Logli customers may return the specified products to their nearest store for a full refund.  Customers with questions may contact P&G at 1-877-340-8826 or the Schnucks Consumer Affairs department at 314-994-4400 or 1-800-264-4400.
